“Death Valley Project & Historic Overview” National
Park Service, Death Valley National Park ($7873, 2001-02). Pat Martin,
PI. This project involved conducting a historical survey of three
gold mining sites in the Death Valley Park, complete with documentary photographs.
Graduate student Gianfranco Archimede conducted all facets of this project.
“Historical and Archaeological Survey of the Union Building
Property, Calumet, MI,” sub-contract from Bahr, Vermeer, Haecker Architects
and the Keweenaw National Historical Park ($13,668, 2003); Pat Martin,
PI. This small contract project involved a rapid archaeological
survey of the Union Building Site in Calumet, under the direction of graduate
student Tim Mancl.
"Excavation of the Carp River Forge," Michigan Historical
Center, ($22,780, 2002). This project was the latest in a strong of awards
to the Department to support the excavation of the Carp River Forge in
Negaunee, MI – one of the first iron-making operations in the Upper
Peninsula. Graduate student Timothy Mancl is conducting this project.

These two awards continue a long-standing relationship between the Forest
Service and the Department of Social Sciences for the curation of historic
artifacts from sites in the Ottawa and Hiawatha National Forests.

“Mapping of the West Point Foundry,” Scenic

Scarlett, co-PIs. This project supported the 2002 archaeology field school,
with the focus on developing the basic map of the site. Graduate student
Alicia Valentino carried out the majority of the research.
"Excavation of the West Point Foundry," Scenic
Hudson, Inc., ($35,192, 2003); Pat Martin, PI, Susan Martin and
Timothy Scarlett, co-PIs. This project continued the Department's
involvement with the West Point foundry site, as the site of the 2003
archaeology field school. Excavation work began on a number of features,
including the boring mill and office building. Graduate student Kim
Finch is guiding the preparation of the report on the 2003 excavation
efforts.
"Archaeological Survey, Coal Creek Drainage," National
Park Service, Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve ($11,563, 2003);
Pat Martin, PI, Susan Martin and Timothy Scarlett, co-PIs. This project
involves a preliminary archaeological investigation and survey of 20
twentieth-century gold and other mining sites, leading to a more complete
investigation in future years. Graduate student Larry Mishkar will
conduct this project.
